Major Comps

Significant Policy Changes

  1. Majors qualify for one comp ticket per production for eligible performances in the season (as defined below).

  2. A major may request their comp in advance via the online system. The tickets available in advance will be limited.

  3. Picking Up Tickets: Major comp tickets must be picked up at the Will-Call window, with your student ID, at the theatre’s box office on the night of the performance.

  4. SMTD Rush Procedure: Any majors who do not request their tickets in advance may come to the lobby of the venue the night of the performance and join the Rush Line. Majors who join the rush line before 30 minutes prior to the start of the show will be able to request a major comp, as long as seats are available. Seats are not guaranteed, nor will majors be able to select their seat during this time. Seats will be first-come, first-served.

  5. If you reserved a comp in advance and are no longer able to use it, please release your ticket for resale by contacting the box office at smtdtickets@umich.edu, or by calling 734-764-2538.

  6. Please note that seating is at the discretion of the box office, based on ticket availability. In many cases, this may be the balcony or mezzanine.

Who is eligible?

Beginning in the fall of 2022, all full-time undergraduate and graduate majors/concentrators in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance qualify for Major Comps.

Part-time student production employees in scenery, paint, properties, costumes, lighting, etc. also qualify for Major Comps.

What performances are eligible?

  1. Eligible Performances:

    • The ten productions produced by University Productions in the Power Center, Arthur Miller Theatre, and Mendelssohn Theatre.

    • Any ticketed Studio Productions in the Arthur Miller Theatre.

    • Most SMTD-produced, ticketed concerts in Hill Auditorium: A Grand Night for Singing (when applicable), Band-O-Rama, and Halloween Concert.

    • MT Senior Showcase and Collage Concert do not qualify.

    • As of the writing of this document, all performances of eligible productions are available for comp request. Exceptions to this should be expected, and not all performances may be available for purchase at any given time. This policy is subject to change, and may change at the discretion of the box office.

How do I request tickets?

You process your own tickets online! See the full step-by-step process, below. You may select any seat labeled General Admission - Majors (Arthur Miller Theatre or Hill Auditorium), A Main Floor Majors, Mezzanine, or Balcony.

Remember, this is the process for your standard major comp tickets only - if you are also involved in the production please refer to the Company Comps page.

How do I pick up my tickets?

Major comp tickets may be picked up at the Will-Call window at the theatre's box office on the night of the performance. Any comps left in Will-Call by 15 minutes prior to curtain may be released for sale.

Can someone else use my tickets?

We ask that you keep these complimentary tickets for your use only.

What if I can no longer use my tickets?

Email smtdtickets@umich.edu to release your tickets for resale. Tickets that go un-released and un-attended will be subject to lost privileges.

What if I'm a member of the cast or crew?

Do not process your major comps online - your company comps typically have more access so use those instead. You will receive a company code through the production team. If you have not received the code, email smtd-reminders@umich.edu

I'm a new student; how do I get started?

We need to flag you in the ticket system before you can redeem your major comps. Your advisor should email smtd-reminders@umich.edu to confirm your degree and start date. We will create your account and send you an activation email shortly afterwards.
