ATAXIA is a loss of control over voluntary muscle movements. Ataxia is a broad term that describes a group of symptoms that can have a variety of underlying causes. LATE-ONSET CEREBELLAR ATAXIAS (LOCAs) are a group of ataxias that have three major features in common:¹
Symptoms are caused by cerebellar degeneration (cells in the cerebellum—the part of the brain that controls movement and balance—weaken and die)
Symptoms slowly worsen over time
Symptoms are late-onset or adult-onset, meaning that they usually appear after 30 years of age
About 1 to 3 people per 100,000 people (0.001-0.003% of people) are affected by LOCA.²
