Must-Have Qualifications
U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident (NSF requirement).
Current undergraduate (rising sophomore, junior, or senior; graduating seniors not eligible).
Able to participate full-time for the entire program.
At least one introductory course in biology, environmental science, geology, or a related field.
Preferred/Strong Candidate Qualifications
From community colleges, teaching-focused colleges, tribal colleges, minority-serving institutions, or schools with limited research opportunities.
From Metro Detroit or Michigan institutions (early priority); national applicants considered in later phases.
Up to two UM-Dearborn undergraduates may be selected each year.
Interest in urban watershed science and environmental research.
Interest in graduate school or a science career.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
While GPA is considered, more weight is placed on motivation, coursework, references, and research potential.
No prior research experience required.
Students from nontraditional pathways or underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

All REU students are fully supported during their experiences at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, including a $7,000 stipend, travel support to and from Auburn University, research funds, and food and lodging in the dorms for the entire 10 week program (May 18 to July 25, 2026)
While our REU Site cannot provide financial support to international students, we welcome a limited number of highly motivated, self-funded international students to participate in our research and professional development activities.
