Your professional growth is a key component of the REU experience. This program is designed not only to advance your research skills but also to prepare you for future careers in academia, industry, and beyond.
Throughout the 10-week program, we will offer a series of workshops and seminars to build essential professional skills. These sessions are led by faculty, graduate students, and industry experts. Topics will include:
Research Skills: Learn to conduct effective literature reviews, keep a detailed lab notebook, and manage and analyze research data.
Scientific Communication: Develop your public speaking and presentation skills. We will cover how to design a compelling research poster and how to write a clear, concise technical paper or report.
Career and Academic Planning: Participate in sessions on writing a strong resume or CV, preparing for graduate school, and navigating the application process.
Ethics and Safety: All students are required to complete training on the responsible conduct of research and lab safety protocols.
You will be matched with a faculty mentor who will guide you on your research project. You may also have the opportunity to work alongside student mentors who can share insights into their academic journeys. We also arrange networking events where you can meet with fellow REU students, faculty, and research alumni.
The program culminates in a public research symposium. You will present your research findings to the campus community in a poster session or oral presentation. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your hard work, practice your communication skills, and receive valuable feedback.
