At Michigan Physics, we are so fortunate to have such a strong community of students, faculty, and staff. This community includes several wonderful organizations which serve our department.
The Community of Physicists for Inclusion and Equity (CoPhIE), formerly Society for Women in Physics (SWIP), was founded in 2002 by a group of undergraduate students at the University of Michigan (UM). Current membership includes undergraduates, graduates and post-doctoral fellows across multiple departments, including Physics, Applied Physics, Biophysics, and Astronomy.
CoPhIE represents an outstanding team effort, bringing together underrepresented groups in physics-related disciplines at the University of Michigan. The society provides a unique opportunity to develop leadership and organizational skills. The main goals of CoPhIE are networking, mentorship, outreach, education, and leadership.
The National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) is the largest and most recognizable organization devoted to the growth, development, and advancement of the African-American physics community.
The University of Michigan Willie Hobbs Moore Chapter of NSBP is committed to supporting African-American academics and undeserved members of our surrounding community. We organize events focused on professional development, wellness, community building, and outreach.
The University of Michigan Society of Physics Students is an undergraduate student organization for anyone interested in physics. SPS is deeply involved in the physics community, volunteering at educational events, offering tutoring and GRE preparation to students in the area, and hosting biweekly lectures. SPS also hosts a variety of social events.
WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) is a University unit that offers programming for undergraduate and graduate students to support their success in STEM. Our primary goal is to increase the percentage of female-identifying students graduating with STEM degrees and pursuing careers in STEM fields.
