Visiting Manoogian scholar, Dr. Marie-Aude Baronian, lead a roundtable discussion titled: "What is Armenian Studies Today? Perspectives and Challenges." The workshop took place on Tuesday, April 15 at 5:30pm in room 1644 of the International Institute. During this seminar, explored some of the disciplinary, theoretical, and methodological aspects of Armenian Studies in an informal and open discussion.Graduate students were encouraged to reflect upon their own research within the field of Armenian Studies. To that end, we requested that seminar participants try to bring a text or an object (such as a film, image, or case study) that was central for defining their own research or relationship to the field of Armenian Studies today.
Public Lecture:
A workshop was held with Dr. Sabri Ateş (Southern Methodist University) in the framework of his book on borderlands and sectarian conflict in Ottoman society. A chapter of his book entitled “The Kurdish Frontier and Ottoman-Qajar Relations” was distributed and discussed throughout the workshop, which took place on March 18, at 11:00am, at the International Institute, in Room 1644.
On Tuesday, February 18, at 5:00 pm MWAS held a workshop of Neveser Koker's (PhD Candidate in Political Science) working paper, entitled: "Narrating Political Exclusion: Tropes of Nativeness, Decline, and Progress in Mouradgea d'Ohsson's "The General Tableau of the Ottoman Empire". The workshop took place at the International Institute, room 1644.
On Tuesday, December 3 at 1:00 pm MWAS held a workshop on Michael Pifer's (Comp Lit) dissertation chapter, tentatively titled: "Armenian Strangers in the Common Tongue: Cross-Cultural Interaction in Premodern Anatolian Poetry." The workshop will took place at the International Institute, room 1644.
MWAS held a roundtable workshop with Prof. Nazan Maksudyan to discuss her draft paper, which is entitled " 'She ended her borrowed life with a borrowed gun': Women's Suicide, Social Change and Agency in the Later Ottoman Empire and Early Republican Turkey." Nazan Maksudyan is an assistant professor of history at the Sociology Department of Istanbul Kemerburgaz University. She focuses on the history of children and youth in the Ottoman lands. The workshop took place from 5-7pm on Tuesday, November 19 in Room 1644 in the International Institute.
On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at 11:00 am MWAS held a workshop on Richard Antaramian's (History) dissertation chapter, tentatively titled: "Priests Serving as Proxies: Actors for Destabilizing Center-Periphery Relations in the Ottoman Empire, 1850-1869." The workshop took place at the International Institute, room 1644.
On October 29, 2013 at 3:00 pm MWAS held a workshop on Vahe Sahakyan's (Near Eastern Studies) dissertation chapter, tentatively titled: "Territorialization and Social Construction of Fatherland: From Khrimian and Raffi to Armenian Ethno-Territorial Nationalism." Prof. Ara Sanjian provided comments and feedback on the chapter before leading a group discussion.
