Second Half Day: Longitudinal Educational Experience

As part of the "Area of Concentration" pursued in the HO2 and HO3 years, there are longitudinal educational experiences that residents can select from. This is generally a half day per week experience scheduled during elective months over the two years and amounts to approximately 36-40 half days. This can range from opportunities to spend more time in a resident's continuity clinic setting, to experiencing an alternate primary care site, engaging in research experiences, or even rotating through subspecialty clinics!

The University of Michigan Department of Pediatrics is proud to offer individualized educational experiences during residency. Every resident chooses an area of concentration (AOC) to focus their additional training. Each AOC offers suggestions of subspecialty electives that will be helpful for those interested in that specific field of pediatrics; residents have the option to choose additional or alternative electives of interest. In second and third year, residents also begin an additional longitudinal clinic experience (the second half-day), which may be driven in part by their AOC.

Longitudinal Evidence-Based Medicine Curriculum

The goal of our EBM curriculum is to provide the foundations for life-long learning and practice beyond residency. Each resident will participate in a series of three EBM sessions during the HO-2 and HO-3 years. In addition, there are monthly resident-led Journal Clubs to help reinforce the concepts learned during didactic sessions.

Quality Improvement & Safety Curriculum

During their first year, each resident participates in a series of small group discussions with one of the QI mentors to learn the basics of quality improvement terminology and methods. Following this introduction, all residents in their second and third years participate in a collaborative quality improvement project. The quality improvement group meets monthly to discuss ongoing projects and process.

Procedure Curriculum & Mock Codes

Our pediatric residents regularly participate in realistic, immersive simulation experiences in neonatal resuscitation, high-level trauma and management of critically ill patients. A procedural curriculum offers dedicated conference time for practicing required procedures with faculty instruction, along with practice sessions for first-year residents led by the Pediatric Chiefs.

The longitudinal “Mock Code" experiences involve teams of residents directing the resuscitation and Rapid Response of complicated patients from start to finish. After the encounter, debriefing and additional teaching is provided by multidisciplinary staff (Pediatric Critical Care and Pediatric Hospital Medicine faculty, pharmacist, senior residents, etc) on an individualized basis. Through frequent practice, our residents are prepared to manage life threatening situations in the inpatient and intensive care units.
