At the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI), we believe that clear, equitable, and competitive compensation practices are essential for building a vibrant, talented staff community. Our philosophy aligns with the University of Michigan’s Total Compensation Philosophy and supports UMSI’s goals of fostering excellence, innovation, and inclusion.
The use of working titles within the University is governed by principles that ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with both internal organizational structures and market expectations. These principles are designed to define authority, clarify job roles, and ensure proper representation externally, while maintaining alignment with the institution's values and compliance requirements.
To recognize sustained performance and experience within a role, UMSI has established a policy allowing the optional addition of the “Senior” modifier to Assistant Director and Associate Director titles. This designation acknowledges longevity and continued contribution while maintaining alignment with market-based compensation structures and university guidance.
UMSI follows U-M Compensation policy and processes. If a supervisor can confirm that an employee's position has changed significantly enough to warrant a reclassification or a promotion, they should complete the form below to help UMSI HR determine the impact of the changes to this position and to the school.
