Class rosters are available in Wolverine Access under Teaching Support.
Summary:
The Registrar and Student Services team (umsi.registrar@umich.edu) manages wait lists for classes and monitors enrollment. Instructors can forward requests to the RSS team.
Most classes have an automated override process
Instructors can ask for a fully manual process that they manage, or other override constraints by emailing umsi.registrar@umich.edu
Important dates can be found at the residential academic calendar and the MADS academic calendar
Details:
The Office of Academic and Student Affairs, Registrar & Student Services (RSS) team manages the wait lists for classes and monitors enrollment. Reminders will be sent out at the start of the term and at the beginning of the registration periods each semester, which will include additional details pertaining to waitlist management. Faculty should forward any requests for permissions to enroll (overrides) to umsi.registrar@umich.edu. The UMSI RSS team can take care of evaluating class sizes and prioritizing permission requests from faculty taking into account students who are closer to graduation or who have a particular need for a class.
Most classes have an automated override process setup in Wolverine Access (the system). If your class does not have the automated override process setup, you will receive an email from the UMSI RSS team near the first day of the semester. If your class has students on the waitlist within Wolverine Access, the system will issue automatic overrides until the enrollment cap is reached. All automatic overrides are issued based on the student’s waitlist timestamp and happen overnight. The student will receive an email notifying them of the date the override expires. The standard expiration after the first day of class is two days.
If you do not want to use the automated override process and wish to move to a fully manual process that you maintain, please email umsi.registrar@umich.edu.
If you have a specific date that you would like to stop allowing overrides to be processed, please email the course ID, the reason behind the request, and the date to umsi.registrar@umich.edu.
Things to keep in mind when allowing students into your class:
The room capacity is set by the Fire Marshall. It is the maximum number the room can accommodate to safely exit in case of emergency. You will not be allowed to add students beyond the room capacity, regardless of standard physical attendance.
If you have a shadow-section setup, be sure to add the 00X and 10X sections together to determine total enrollment.
There are some variations to how faculty approach this, so talking with others may be helpful. A few things that we suggest:
Take attendance during the first weeks of class.
If a class is full with a large waitlist, keep umsi.registrar@umich.edu posted on the attendance.
After the first couple of classes, enrollment should start to stabilize so you can get a better sense of who can be let in.
Only during the first week of classes, if a student is on the waitlist, the institution welcomes them to attend the class .
How do you choose who receives an override for your class? Here are some helpful tips on typical prioritization used by UMSI:
UMSI students who are graduating soonest as the first priority
UMSI Dual Degree students
Students who may need the class to complete a degree or certificate
Non-UMSI students who are graduating soonest
Students can and do continue to make scheduling changes online through the third week of the semester, so you may see some change in your enrollment during that time. After the third week, students will need your signature or electronic approval within Wolverine Access to add or drop the course. Typically students are allowed to drop after the third week (with faculty permission) if their situation calls for it; however it is rare to have a student add after that point.
UMSI residential programs follow the UM academic calendar available at https://ro.umich.edu/calendars . This site also shows a listing of student registration deadlines. The MADS online program follows its own calendar available under the MADS section on this site, https://www.si.umich.edu/current-students/mads-calendars.
