The Automotive Futures group has more than 30 years of combined research expertise and thought leadership centered on issues affecting the domestic and global automotive industries. These issues include globalization of the industry, powertrain strategies, and New Mobility in the form of intelligent transportation systems, autonomous vehicles, and advanced safety systems. Among its activities, Automotive Futures offers an affiliate program to industry partners to support the development and exchange of knowledge. Automotive Futures researchers provide affiliates with automotive industry research and analysis, information resources, and communication forums. The team hosts five conferences throughout the calendar year in February, April, July, September, and November, one being the annual Focus on the Future research conference series, which brings together university researchers and automotive industry leaders to discuss current issues and future trends.
Bruce M. Belzowski, Managing Director, Automotive Futures Research Group, received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Michigan, respectively. He trained in research at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research while a graduate student. He began his career studying the global automotive industry at R.L.Polk before joining the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), from which he retired in 2018.
Over his 30 years of researching the automotive industry, he has authored research reports focusing on a variety of automotive topics including product development, manufacturer-supplier-dealer relations, globalization, information technology, knowledge management, and human resources. His current research topics include intelligent transportation systems (ITS), information technology, powertrain strategies, and globalization of the automotive industry. He is widely quoted in the mainstream press, as well as in the academic arena. He has testified before the US Congress on automotive globalization issues and speaks at conferences around the world.
Bruce mentors students at the University of Michigan while continuing to conduct research, put on five conferences a year, and manage his Affiliate Program. He is also a steering committee member of the GERPISA global automotive research group in France.
