NOTE: You will not be able to access your MarylandSmith account after January 31st, 2023. A timeframe of 5 to 6 months was provided to transfer, backup or otherwise download your data. As of January 31st, 2023 your MarylandSmith account has been deleted and is now a mail forwarding address only. Please see the FAQs for more information.
Google Takeout is a tool that allows you to export all or some of your selected data from various Google apps, including calendar, mail, and drive. You can use this tool to create an archive of your current Google account, download it to a PC or Mac or store in another service such as Box, Dropbox or OneDrive.
Note: that you must make sure that the location you are copying your data has sufficient storage space to hold it. For example, "free" GMail accounts only have 15Gb of storage space. Login to your MarylandSmith account and go to https://drive.google.com/drive/quota to see how much storage space you are currently using in your Google account.
Sign into your MarylandSmith account and once logged in visit the Google Takeout site here.
Select the applications you would like to export data from. You can also choose to select only a subset of data from an application by clicking on the "All... included" buttons below the application, where applicable. Some applications also have the option to select the format you would like Google to use when exporting the data. It is generally recommended to use the default format options displayed on this page unless you have specific needs.
When ready, click Next step at the bottom of the page.
NOTE: (Added December 6th, 2022) re Reported issues using Takeout to export Google Photos has been declared fixed by Google. You can still transfer a copy of your Google Photos as described here:
See this help article from Google called Set up partner sharing and complete the section under Share photos with a partner, sharing out from your MarylandSmith account to your personal Gmail account. Once you have completed the sharing (recommended to share all photos from a date a long time ago), you must expand the section on that page that says Find your partners photos and complete the Save your partners photos. If you fail to do this, the photos will disappear when the MarylandSmith account is removed on January 31st, 2023. We have no way to recover any photos you fail to backup.
On this step you can choose how you'll receive the data that is exported. There are several options, the default being Send download link via email. As you'd expect, you'll get an email once the export is completed with links you can click on and download the files.
Alternative you can click the dropdown under Delivery Method and choose from Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box. If you choose one of these options you'll be prompted to authenticate to those accounts later during this process (and is outside the scope of this document, refer to the Google Help articles on Takeout for more information).
Under Frequency leave the default setting of Export once, leave the File type as .zip and the default file size of 2Gb is a good option.
Click the Create export button at the bottom of the screen to continue.
You can monitor the progress of your export at the bottom of the page. If you don't have much data or are only exporting a single small application, the process may complete almost immediately. However if you have a lot of data in Drive or Gmail, it may take a few days to prepare the export for download.
Once the export is complete you will be notified. If you chose to receive the download links via email, then you will see them also at the top of the Takeout page, otherwise if you had the data transferred to Drive, Box etc you would need to go find the data there instead.
