The purpose of this book is to utilize open science to conduct and disseminate research on the UMD Grand Challenges.
The UMD Grand Challenges fall into five main categories. These categories represent emerging social issues that represent some of today's most pressing problems. The five categories are listed below:
Climate Change - including subjects such as clean energy, sustainability, and food and water insecurity
Social and Racial Injustice - includes subjects such as poverty, education disparities, and structural inequality
Global Health - includes subjects such as health equity, pandemic preparedness, mental health, and wellness
Threats to Democracy
Ethical, Fair, & Trustworthy Technology - includes subjects such as bias-free artificial intelligence, privacy, and transparent uses of data
The purpose of this book is to conduct and disseminate research regarding all of the UMD Grand Challenges. Presently, the topics covered in this book primarily cover topics having to do with the global health grand challenge but we expect it to expand as the research included in this book expands and evolves.
