This section details benefit information related specifically to Resident Life employees.
University-wide benefits information is available at on UHR's website.
Erica Williams in Human Resources serves as our parking coordinator and will send updates regarding any changes in permits, parking restrictions (gamedays, weather-related, etc.), and reminders.
New staff members will be walked through the process of purchasing a parking permit (if needed), which will include the completion of the following forms:
Faculty Staff Registration
Payroll Deduction Authorization
Resident Life Parking Information Form
The total price of a parking permit varies depending on the type of permit, your salary, and time of year. For a list of current prices please visit the DOTS website
Parking locations are generally determined by office location and staff type.
Validation codes for campus visitors to park in visitor parking areas may be obtained from our parking coordinator. Validation codes & other types of permits intended for Resident Life programs & speakers are charged to the requesting unit. Codes & permits used for new staff move-in are paid for by HR. Also, guest permits for live-on staff are provided annually free of charge
The department also provides a limited number of Courier Passes to park in designated Courier Spaces that can be checked out from various unit offices. Please check with your unit to see if these are available for your use. These are for occasional use only for non-university vehicles for a maximum of 20 minutes of parking (other rules apply). They should not be used for regular parking needs and do not serve as replacements for parking permits.
Additional parking information can be found on the parking page on the DOTS website.
Transportation Services also has information about commuting, campus shuttles, bicycles, e-scooters, and sustainability. Campus parking maps are available online.
Staff may also want to review the commuter benefits and incentives available via DOTS.
Staff (and their dependents) may be eligible for tuition remission at our campus and other institutions in the state. Resident Life supports those who desire additional coursework and degrees. There may be restrictions based on program admission, program cost (not all programs are fully covered by tuition remission), site of coursework, and eligibility. Staff should also seek to balance their coursework with the primary responsibilities of their position and should discuss expectations with their supervisor. Faculty or staff employees who wish to utilize tuition remission by taking courses during the day must receive the approval of their immediate supervisor and department head, who will ensure that daytime coursework does not interfere with the employee’s assigned responsibilities, and does not have operational impact. Tuition remission is a benefit staff should expect to be supported by our department.
The policies and forms are too numerous to outline in this handbook. Detailed information can be found on UHR's webpage about Tuition Remission.
You can also consult with our Human Resources team to better understand how tuition remission may be possible for you.
Full-time staff in our department may have opportunities to teach credit-bearing classes on campus. These are available through our department (e.g., the RA Class), through academic departments directly (e.g., being a TA for a class in the Student Affairs Concentration), through another Student Affairs unit (e.g., teaching a Transfer2Terp course in The Stamp), or through the UNIV 100 series (housed in various departments). Not all positions in Resident Life are suitable for outside teaching and staff interested in teaching should seek approval from their supervisor and discuss the time commitment and the impact on your Resident Life role.
If staff teach a course that provides compensation (typically a stipend), they must mark the time away for teaching as Annual Leave or Personal Leave on their timesheets.
The Department of Resident Life recognizes the strong interest of staff to engage in professional development including local, regional, and national professional conferences and workshops. These experiences are a source of professional development, improvement of performance in their roles, and ultimately, a benefit to our department.
Visit our Professional Development Funding page for more information about the process.
