Silent Dis-Glo (9/5/24, The Clarice)
#music #dance #visualart
The Silent Dis-Glo was a perfect place to go to with my friends on a Thursday Night (I am pictured with an arrow above my head). I had never seen such a great use of neon lights in one place. The entrance (where the picture is taken) had a section of string lights set up that fell from the ceiling. As an architecture major, I was excited to see that this open space was used so well to fit the theme of glow. The neon lights really added to the glow theme more than I would've imagined. I thought that the music was the only thing that was going to connect to art, and I was truly surprised that I enjoyed the set up so much as well. The main attraction: the music was also super cool. I had never been to a silent disco and don't really listen to music that often, so I thought I wasn't going to know a lot of songs. Since there were three channels to switch between, I was able to find songs that I knew and could dance too. I was even able to enjoy music that I have never heard before. This let me branch out into different genres of music. The Silent Dis-Glo was a super cool experience. It made me branch out of the visual arts and try taking part in art through music and dancing!
China on Stage Ep.4 (Published in 2023 watched 9/26/2024, Theatre in Video, Leading Women)
#dance #theatre #culture #oprah #singing
This episode of China on Stage titled Leading Women talked directly about different women and how they use art in their lives. Peking Oprah was the main topic of the whole episode. A lot of the women went into depths about why they got into Peking Oprah. They all had different back stories which aligns with what we talked about in the colloquium this week. B.A Medina came into class and discussed how we all have different backgrounds. Medina had us fill out a wheel and we colored in which items we related to. Some of the parts of the wheel were gender, sexuality, and religion. The gender identity really related to Leading Women because two of the women in Peking Oprah said how they wanted to change Peking Oprah from a male dominated genre to more female dominated. I love how there was such a great connection between this episode of China on Stage and the last colloquium we just had. The second half of the episode explained all the behind the scenes of different plays that use Peking Oprah. One play in particular that was discussed was Internal Wave that showcased the history of Shanghai. The director said that she went to old towns in Shanghai to try and get inspired on what the backdrops should look like. I have watched some plays but have never seen the behind the scenes of them and how they operate which was very interesting to see. Overall, I found Leading Women very interesting and inspiring to learn about and will definably continue to watch other episodes of China on Stage.
Craft & Chat (10/21/24, Bel Air Lounge, Snowflakes in Fall)

The craft & chat was very nostalgic for me because at my babysitter's house after school, I would always make these types of snowflakes. All of my friends would go to the same babysitter after school and would make these snowflakes during the winter. Making these snowflakes again expanded the arts skills I already had. Usually when I would make these snowflakes, I would only use white paper but this time, there wasn't any white paper. Since it was colorful, there was a fall theme instead of a winter theme. The white paper would've given the winter theme but since there were colors used; it matched the trees outside. This snowflake activity connected with some of the ideas in the wicked questions that were discussed today in colloquium. They connected with the questions "How are our own artistic tastes shaped by our social identities and the broader culture?" and "How do social forces such as politics, economics, religion, gender, race, or culture play a role in the creation of a work of art?" Both of these questions connect to the artist and since I have history with making these snowflakes, my background would be shown in the way I answer these questions. Overall, I enjoyed making these snowflakes again and loved how I was able to add some new decor in the lounge.
