After reviewing my ePortfolio, I’ve noticed my growth through tryathlons. I’ve grown to relate each tryathlon to what we are learning in class. I’ve also noticed how I’m better at brainstorming art ideas that relate to my research. With my capstone project, I had issues with my original topic. I was unmotivated and I didn’t like my topic as much as I should’ve been. This made me lack the creativity and motivation to do the research. As a result, I switched my capstone late into the semester and this gave me little time to research and complete artwork. I managed to use what I’ve learned in class, for example, “plan like a President”. Through this method, I was able to create a clear plan and carry it out effectively. If I were to do this project before learning what I’ve learned from this class, I don’t think I would’ve been able to carry this out.
My perception of art has been influenced and redefined after taking this class and going to Art Scholar events. Whenever anyone would mention art, I would immediately think of paintings and sculptures. I didn’t really think that art could be in everything we do. For example, cooking, dancing, music. It was cool seeing different communities come during classes to share their culture, like the African drumming. That was one of my favorite classes. It was really cool to learn about their culture and I really saw the art of community and culture that I never really thought about or noticed prior to art scholars.
Through my capstone project, I learned about curating. That was very interesting to me because we curate everyday and we may not even realize it. I didn’t know how important curating could be. I never thought about the curation process for museums and art galleries. I just assumed they just place it wherever. After the class where we learned about curating, I was able to curate my own Art’s Fest gallery, in a way that presented my message better.
Growing up, I was a Rhythmic Gymnast and it was where I spent all my time and even had to quit viola to pursue gymnastics. Due to this, I already knew the time and effort goes into making/creating art or doing something you're passionate about. This class deepened my interests because after quitting gymnastics, I was able to draw again and experiment more and improve on my drawing and painting skills through my capstone. This class also expanded my creative abilities and interests by letting me try new mediums, and being introduced to art forms I never really knew before. Poetry was something I never really got into or knew, but this class really helped me see how impactful poetry could be along with all the other art forms.
Looking back on my experiences in Art Scholars, I’ve demonstrated my ability to collaborate effectively with those holding diverse perspectives, interests, and abilities. I think working on my Capstone really showed me the different perspectives and beliefs everyone had. I learned a lot from my peers, especially during my critique class.
