Interdisciplinary classes (Bronze Level):
My proposed (and one-third completed) interdisciplinary experience is taking classes that facilitate my communication ability. In Fall 2018, I took ENGL 271 (Introduction to Creative Writing: Fiction) to improve my writing skills. Later, I will take THTR 110 (Introduction to Acting). to improve my ability to communicate verbally and non-verbally. I also may take MCS 222 - Introduction to Media & Communication Studies to learn how to communicate with technology.
Brief Reflection:
So far in ENGL 271, I have learned to write fictional short stories. As part of this class I wrote a 15-page short story myself and it was evaluated by my classmates. Also, as part of this class I evaluated other people’s stories so I could clearly see what writing techniques worked and what writing techniques did not work. I believe this has helped me improve my writing though of course I will still need to practice writing to keep getting better at it.
Applications:
I think this experience is weakly connected to my grand challenge. I will obviously be able to see how teachers differ across disciplines and may be able to learn some of the strategies they use to personalize what they do. Far more importantly, I will learn how to better articulate myself and defend personalized learning and its importance.

- I believe this experience will help with perspectivism. This experience will undoubtedly help me to think in a new way as the classes are radically different from the classes I would normally take. I will learn and practice skills that are more fluid and less concerned with optimization and the “right” answer than I am used to. I will also connect with people who are planning to immerse themselves in these fields and thus might have very different takes on global issues than I do.

- Identify the different disciplines that contribute to the solution of a complex problem. Through this experience I will be exposed to many different fields that take very different approaches to solving problems.
- Describe and apply strategies for creating common ground between different disciplinary perspectives. In the theater class in particular, I may have a change to team up with people in various disciplines and learn how to cooperate with them.
- Describe and apply bridging strategies that facilitate the conscious integration of different disciplines. I will undoubtedly use the thinking strategies (particularly the creative and divergent ones) that I will learn and cultivate in these classes will be applied to what I am doing in my capstone classes and entrepreneurship classes. I will also work to use the analytical thinking strategies that I have learned in my technical classes to “optimize” so to speak, my creative ventures.
