Started Entrepreneurship Minor (Gold-level):
In Fall 2017, I took Entrepreneurship 200 at my school. In this course I learned the business end of innovation. In other words, how to take innovative technology (in my case educational technology) and bring it to everyone who wants to purchase it. I hope to use this experience to learn more about how to scale grand solutions and bring them to the people who need them the most. So far, I have done market and competitor research, financial projections, and product analysis. The culmination of this class was a pitch where I will present my idea to my class to practice investor pitches and showcase my ideas.
In the future, I will continue to take Entrepreneurship credits, which will continue to expand my knowledge of entrepreneurship and its relationship with the grand challenges. I will also continue connect my grand challenge to these classes in any way possible. I will also look for classes in my major and that relate to my grand challenges that also count towards the entrepreneurship minor. The entrepreneurship minor is 18 credits. I will finish the minor by the time I graduate (which should be May 2020).
Brief Reflection: So far this experience was very interesting. I learned a lot about the process of starting a company and about innovation. I also heard many innovative ideas from my peers. I hope to continue to learn about entrepreneurship and innovation. Unfortunately, so far I was not able to inspire people to join my team so far, thus I had to work alone. Even so, I learned a lot about a lot of the methods used by startups to get their product to market. (Also, see Reflection: Creativity, under the Reflections tab.)
Applications: I believe this experience is strongly connected to my grand challenge, because throughout most of my experience I will be able to learn the business side of technological development (including technology related to my grand challenge). I will also be able to connect with my grand challenge by basing my class projects on educational technology. I have already been able to do this in my Entrepreneurship 200 course, basing my project around a collaborative learning management tool.
Learning Objectives:
Teamwork, a lot of the classes for entrepreneurship require group projects, allowing me to work in teams both good and (possibly) not as good. I will be able to learn more about teamwork and management and learn what a good team looks like. I will also learn how to build a good team from scratch and qualities to look for in team players. Also, I will be able to recognize unhealthy habits in myself with regards to team building traits and correct them. Finally, as this is college, I will undoubted learn how to deal with a team under stress.
