British or American?
One of the most frequently recurring questions is wether to adopt British or American pronunciation/transcription.
One of the most frequently recurring questions is wether to adopt British or American pronunciation/transcription.
There are two parts to this question. While this is a difficult call and depends on personal choice, among other things, my answer is generally a simple one: Whichever pronunciation you're comfortable with, as long as you're consistent.
The second part to the question is more directly relevant to this website. Those familiar with British dictionaries will already have come across IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols. It is generally more difficult to check pronunciation in American dictionaries, particularly those using the Kenyon and Knott system, or any system other than IPA.
In this website, the symbols used are those of the IPA, with adaptations as far as possible to American pronunciation.
