I have designed, piloted and implemented a website that helps students improve their ability to write email requests to faculty in English.
Its contents are theoretically and empirically based, and have been developed taking into account principles of instructed language acquisition, pragmatic instruction and criteria for the design of self-access online materials.
If you are interested in using the website as part of your language module, do not hesitate to contact me at sonia.lopez@ull.edu.es.
In collaboration with CRETA (University of Alicante), I am currently developing a website whose aim is to help international students develop their written communication skills for the Spanish university context.
It is still under construction, but it you have students who are planning on coming to Spain, they can use the website to start working on interesting concepts such as the differences between formality and politeness (and how to apply this knowledge to the Spanish university context) and on how to create an effective structure (including subject line, opening lines and closing lines).
It is publicly available here.
PODCAST REVIEW TASK
This task works very well with high-intermediate and advanced EFL students. With it, you can foster your students' engagement and given them reasons to listen, read and write. It could also be easily adapted to include speaking if students were asked to share their reviews as audios or videos.
This is a two-step task:
Step 1: Students choose a podcast, listen to an episode and write a review persuading their classmates to listen to it (detailed instructions in the file below). Students may share their reviews on a platform such as Padlet.
Step 2: Students read their classmates' reviews, choose one of the reviewed episodes and listen to it. Later write a comment responding to their classmate's initial review. Did they agree with their views? Did they enjoy the episode? Was it worth the listen?
