SONG LYRICS:
Condansoy, inom tuba Laloy
Dili co moinom, tuba pait aslom
Ang tuba sa baybay patente mo angay
Talacsan nga diutay pono ang malaway.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF LYRICS:
Condansoy, drink some tuba Laloy
No, I won’t drink at all, tuba is bitter-sour
Tuba sold by the seashore ought to get a patent
For a little glass of it will make you drool.
There are regional variations in neighboring provinces, but the Visayan ballad Condansoy or Kondansoy is primarily sung in Cebuano-speaking areas. This song is distinct from Dandansoy, another song from the Visayas. Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company is the recorded artist of this song and its date of release is 1962.
Condansoy, a boy, is urged to sip Laloy's tuba, a coconut wine, in this song. He sensibly declines. Hearing this song for the first time gave me a jolly feeling maybe because the video I saw was a group of children singing this song and it’s really catchy because the lyrics are very easy to understand, and by just reading the lyrics you get the idea of the song.
SONG LYRICS:
Si Pilemon, si Pilemon namasol sa kadagatan.
Nakakuha, nakakuha og isdang tambasakan.
Gibaligya, gibaligya sa merkadong guba—
Ang halin pulos kura, ang halin pulos kura,
Igo lang eukanuba
TAGALOG VERSION:
Si Filemon, si Filemon, nangisda sa karagatan,
Nakahuli, nakahuli ng isdang tambasakan,
Pinagbili, pinagbili sa isang maliit na palengke
Kumita ng kaunting pera, kumita ng kaunting pera,
Para lang sa kanyang alak na tuba.
ENGLISH VERSION:
Philemon, Philemon went to sea to catch some fish
He was able to get, to get only a small mudskipper.
He sold it, sold it at a dilapidated market
For it he got nothing much, nothing much
Just enough to buy tuba.
It is a Cebuano folk song that is so well-known among Tagalog speakers that it was included in a list of popular Filipino folk songs. A fisherman named Philemon is the subject of the song. He caught a tambasakan (mudskipper), sold it in a local market, and then used the proceeds to purchase tuba or coconut wine.
This song “Si Pilemon” is a hilarious song for me because it relates to so many Filipinos where your income or salary would be spent to buy alak (alcohol drinks). This song is very famous for its simplicity yet funny and meaningful lyrics.
