Now that we know a little on why the Ancient Egyptians worshiped these gods, lets look more into the gods themselves, where they come from, what they look like, and what they do.
Horus, the god of healing, kingship as well as the sky was a major deity in mythology. Depicted as a man with the head of a falcon, it was said his right eye was the sun and his left eye was the moon. Osiris, the god of the dead, as well as vegetation and the flooding of the Nile leading to fertility. was depicted as a man holding a shepherd’s hook and a whip. This symbolized his power as a former Pharaoh He was worshiped as one of the most powerful gods and judged people in the afterlife to lead them into their new lives. He was a wise and widely respected ruler and god throughout history. Isis, the wife of Osiris and god of love, fertility and protector of women. Depicted as a woman with a staff and sometimes having wings her presence in mythology is everywhere. The mother of Egypt in a way her influence on powerful female figures as well as male figures gave woman a powerful voice to look to in Egypt. She also had powerful ties to magic in the ancient world. Amun, the god of the air and more specifically the wind is depicted by a man sometimes with blue skin as well as a ram head. He controlled how powerful winds were and many looked to him when the winds were too powerful and prayed for him to stop, they depicted these winds as anger and to be prayed away by the Egyptians. Anubis, the god of mummification and the afterlife was the protector of the souls going to the afterlife. He was the god many priests would worship to help lead souls of people going through mummification. He was depicted as a man with the head of a jackal. Thoth, The god of writing and learning was depicted as a man with the head of an ibis. Egyptians used stories of Thoth to explain knowledge and where writing systems came from. He is the father of knowledge and is said to give knowledge to those worthy meaning many scholars prayed to him for blessings of knowledge and insight. Ra, was the god of the sun depicted as a man with the head of a falcon he was similar to the god Horus in that they both were sun gods. Ra is known to come first but it is important to note that the two gods were later merged into one throughout history. Bes, the god of fertility, music, and protector of the household. He is depicted as a dwarf with large features such as a massive head and it is said to grant woman fertility and men would pray to Bes for this reason as well as to watch over their homes while away. Sobek, the god of military and of war as well as fertility was a very important and viscous god. Depicted as a man with the head of a crocodile he was also said to watch over the Nile. Priests would raise crocodiles as reincarnations of Sobek in temples to be prayed to. Nephthys the goddess of death and darkness was also the goddess of healing and magic. Her story is interesting because she seems to be counteractive leading people to death while also healing others. She also is said to watch over the house and was a main source of prayer from Pharohe's. While there are well over a thousand gods and goddesses in Egyptian religion these were some of the most important in day to day life for Egyptians.
The eyes on the pyramid cap-stone and the coffins were not protective, but, as we learn from the inscription which accompanies them on the cap-stone and also on one coffin, enabled the dead to see the light of day (Gardiner1916:page6)
