UNIVERSITY OF THE EAST

The University of the East, also known as UE, is a private university located in the Philippines, having 3 campuses all of which are located within the National Capital Region: UE Manila, UE Caloocan, and the UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMC) in Quezon City.

UE is one of the country’s leading universities, with a 77-year existence as of September 2023. Throughout its history, UE has produced over a million alumni who have excelled in diverse fields, both within the Philippines and on the global stage. UE was once labeled as the "largest university in Asia" when its enrollment reached over 65,000 students.

History of University of the East (UE)

The University of the East (UE) began in two rented rooms on Dasmarinas Street in Manila in September 1946, just after the Philippines obtained independence, with 110 students enrolled in Certified Public Accountant (CPA) review classes. Dr. Francisco T. Dalupan Sr. organized a group of business educators to aid the country's post-war recovery. In 1947, four of the initial 110 students received top marks in the CPA board tests.

Encouraged by their success, Dr. Dalupan and his colleagues created the Philippine College of Commerce and Business Administration (PCCBA) in Sampaloc, Manila, in 1947. On July 3, 1951, the PCCBA became the University of the East. In later years, the university expanded significantly, creating new colleges and establishing the UE Caloocan campus and the UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center.

The 1980s brought financial concerns, prompting severe measures and innovative initiatives such as the introduction of new courses and facility leasing. Under the leadership of Lucio C. Tan and Panfilo O. Domingo, UE underwent financial restructuring and operational improvements in 1990. Dr. Rosalina S. Cajucom, followed by other leaders, became the president, leading to the reduction of debts and the elimination of the operating deficit by the late 1990s.

Following Chairman Domingo's death in 2008, Dr. Lucio C. Tan was appointed Chairman of the Board and CEO of the University.
