Certamen is a game of fast facts and speed, similar to quiz bowl. It's a fun and intense game, and tournaments are often held on the local, state, and national levels. Certamen is played in 2 categories: Open or Competitive Certamen. Open Certamen is more laid-back and is best for those who have not had much Certamen practice, while Competitive Certamen is more fast-paced and is used for competitions. All players must be cleared by provincial/state chairs to play Competitive Certamen at NJCL. There are 3 divisions of Competitive Certamen: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced.
