Paper and Digital Materials
Identify the goal of the activity you assign. Ask yourself:
Is it an important outcome? Avoid assigning “busy work.” Keep in mind that “Less is More”. A few targeted activities are much better than long lists of activities.
Is it relevant to the student’s learning needs? If not, don't assign it.
What are the essential components of this learning goal? What should EVERY student know? Focus on that.
How can I design the assignment(s) to help learners achieve this goal?
Paper Materials
Write goals in student-friendly language.
Attach it to the assignment (write it on, sticky note, staple an attached note)
Encourage parents to talk with their learner about the goal, and rewrite it in their own words. (put this direction on the paper, sticky note, attached note)
Digital Materials
Write goals in student friendly language.
Make it visible on your platform/website/Schoology site (right next to the assignment)
Ask students to rewrite the goal in their own words and post it in your communication feed. (discussion thread, seesaw, etc.)
Paper and Digital Materials
Allow students more than one way to show what they know (draw it, write it, say it, etc.)
Provide optional pathways for learners to achieve the goal (alone, with a parent, with a classmate, by: reading, doing, watching, talking with a peer, using a graphic organizer)
