Ms. Laura Nemec am from Dutchess County, New York, where yes we actually do get snow in the winter!
I have a BS in Biology from Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA (2007) and received a MS from the University of Delaware in Animal Science with a focus on dairy cattle (2010).
I have a wonderful Labrador named Tucker, who serves many functions for me. He hunts, he swims and he is a willing specimen for my Introduction to Animal Science Laboratory every fall.
As the Laboratory Coordinator, I am able to both teach students and remain on the farm working with all the wonderful species we have here at the University. I am involved in the Introduction to Animal Science Laboratory, the honors section of Animals, Science and Society, the Functional Anatomy Laboratory and honors sections, the Nutrition Laboratory, and our capstone production classes of Dairy, Beef & Sheep, Swine and Poultry. I have had the opportunities to work side by side with our field service veterinarians from the University of Pennsylvania, New Bolton Center on everything from routine exams to aiding in the birth of one very large stubborn bull calf and his petite first time mother (both calf and cow #911 were fine). It comes from these experiences that I strive to teach my students in a way that allows them to learn the best way they can and make the most of these hands-on opportunities during both classroom and laboratory time.
I had a similar dream to many of the animal lovers out there, I wanted to become a veterinarian. At the end of my undergraduate career, I was unsure if vet school at that time was the right decision. I had just realized that seeing blood from an animal and staying conscious did not at that time go hand in hand for me. So I pursued a graduate program in animal science. I came to the University of Delaware as they had an open position with a new dairy faculty member. I have been horse back riding my entire life, but cows were large, furry and had 4 legs so they were close enough for me to accept the offer. Throughout my graduate work I began teaching classes and that is when I realized I have a great passion for teaching others the animal science. I actually walked out of my master's thesis defense and down the lane into an interview with the chair of our department for the Laboratory Coordinator position.
I hope that this program will give me the resources to move up in the College as I would like to one day pursue a position within the Dean's office. This school and this college in particular is a very special place to me, where no matter what office I end up in, I am never far from the farm and all the wonderful animals that are my original love.
