Deciduous vegetation provides shading during summer months and direct light during winter months, effectively decreasing heating and cooling energy needs.
By using green infrastructure in conjunction with existing infrastructure to address environmental stresses, more involved and expensive gray infrastructure is not needed.
Wetlands and porous coverings redirect precipitation away from sewage systems. Other methods include:
Rain harvesting
Rain gardens
Street planters
Collecting rain water can be reused for non-potable uses including:
irrigation
toilet flushing
water-based cooling
