Issue #1: No professional project experience

• Remember to lead with your most relevant experience in the interview, such as ND projects or projects hosted on your GiHub Profile. You can also talk about recent personal experiences in ways that showcase transferable skills.
• Example(s) :

1. “As a stay at home parent, I volunteered frequently as an event planner for my school PTA. In this role, I pitched a new idea for a fundraising event to the entire PTA with my own presentation, and took on executing the event in only 1 month. To meet this high pressure deadline, I delegated tasks to a small team to execute the event for a group of 80 parents and students. As a result of my effective project management, we were able to launch the fundraising on time, and exceed our fundraising goal of x dollars. Today, working as a programmer, I aim to apply my strong communication and collaborative abilities to my work in order to help any team achieve great business results.”
2. “I have had extensive experience in organizing professional local meetups in my area. Through this experience, I developed excellent communication and time management skills in order to act as the main point of contact with the panel speakers and meetup organizers. On many occasions, my enthusiastic networking secured exciting new speakers for the monthly meetups. As the one overseeing the meetups, I managed other members who were involved, so that they always completed their tasks on time. I aim to apply these same skills in my work as an engineer, by communicating effectively with my teammates and meeting time-sensitive deadlines when building new products.”

Issue #2: Limited by a NDA (nondisclosure agreement)

A nondisclosure agreement is a contract by which one or more parties agree not to disclose confidential information that they have shared with each other as a necessary part of doing business together. (source: Google Dictionary) In this context, the two parties would be the employee and the employer.

A company might ask you to sign a NDA to protect details including:

• New product information
• Client information
• Unique manufacturing process
• Sales and marketing plans

If you choose to talk about a project for which you signed a NDA:

1. Read the NDA you signed carefully, and know which parts you can and can’t share. Tip: Review the specifics of the NDA prior to going for an interview! We are not legal experts, so consult with your lawyer if you have any deeper questions about your NDA.
2. Interviewers are aware of NDAs and should not push you to break it. In fact, demonstrating that you are careful with divulging information limited by a NDA shows your trustworthiness and integrity as an employee.
3. If you’re unsure, when determining what information to share, ask yourself: “If I shared this information, would it harm the company I’m working for?”
