Our senior design team is very grateful to be partnering with the United Cerebral Palsy organization of San Diego and collaborate closely with their Toy and Software Lending Library to come up with a solution for making play technology more accessible for families in the San Diego area!
UCP , or United Cerebral Palsy, is a non-profit organization that provides many different resources for people living with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. The San Diego chapter provides many services and resources around the area, such as the Toy and Software Lending Library.
The Toy & Software Lending Library is a program that offers accessible play technology (toys, softwares, etc.) to the San Diego community through a library service where families can participate in check-out sessions for a two-week period for their children. There is a San Diego location as well as a mobile program that provides toys to different areas in the county. This service is designed for children with any disability with a developmental age ranging from birth to 5 years old.

BENG Senior Design x Project in a Box @ UCSD
Monday, June 3rd, 5 - 6:30 pm @ DIB Makerspace :
As part of our team's outreach goal, a big component of the senior design team was to spread awareness about the inacccessibility in accessible play technology for children with disabilities. Although switch-adapted toys are available online through different websites, they are often very expensive and can be an extra burden for families to obtain, especially considering the increased cost of living for people with disabilities. Partnering with the UCSD engineering student organization Project in a Box (PiB), we organized a toy adaptation workshop on campus so that we can teach students how to adapt switches that will connect to off-the-shelf toys!
Workshop Components:
Background on Toy Adaptation and Toy Lending Libraries
Explanation of our toy adaptation method, including the materials needed
Introduction to soldering
Detailed step-by-step guide to building adaptive switch
Hackathon: Brainstorm session and discussion
Collect all adaptive switches to be donated to Toy and Software Lending Library of San Diego!
