Chemical reactions involve complicated interactions between atoms and molecules and are often too abstract to imagine for people without professional training. The mission of SMALL is to make chemistry "visible"： to watch a chemical process in real space and in real time. In SMALL, you can see single chemical bonds and track their changes happen within a fraction of a second.

SMALL offers research opportunities for undergraduates throughout the school year. Undergraduate students at UCSD may choose to take CHEM 199: Undergraduate Research to receive academic credits. Students in other institutes may participate through the UCSD MRSEC summer program and/or the "Visualization of Chemistry" Summer school.
