Chemical reactions involve complicated interactions between atoms and molecules and are often too abstract to imagine for people without professional training. The mission of SMALL is to make chemistry "visible": to watch a chemical process in real space and in real time. In SMALL, you can see single chemical bonds and track their changes happen within a fraction of a second.
Some chemical reactions are changing, or have changed our daily life. Please follow our Facebook page where we share stories about some of these chemical processes including:
The Keeling Curve: the alarming increase of CO2 in the air.
Quantum Chemistry: where is quantum in our life?
SMALL offers research opportunities for undergraduates throughout the school year. Undergraduate students at UCSD may choose to take CHEM 199: Undergraduate Research to receive academic credits. Students in other institutes may participate through the UCSD MRSEC summer program and/or the "Visualization of Chemistry" Summer school.
