Panopto is provisioned for all courses in Blackboard starting the Summer semester of 2020.  If you do not see the Panopto Video tab in your default course menu.  If you do not see this tab please reach out to CTL.  

Panopto offers valuable tutorials on Panopto.  New users are encouraged to view the How to Use Panopto with Blackboard.

If you have created a video using Panopto for a specific course but want to use it in another course, it’s recommended that you use the Panopoto “move” feature.  See these directions illustrated at Move Panopto Files to a Different Course

1. Before you start this process, you will want to identify a few things.  First, it’s recommended that you determine the CRN where the video currently resides and the CRN for the course you wish to move the video to.  You only need the last 5 digits of the CRN (Ex: 23456).  Have these numbers handy as you will need to enter these during the next phase of this process.

2.  Login to the UCM hosted Panopto server at ucmo.hosted.panopto.com  

3. From here you will see videos that you have access to.  To search for the course your are moving the video from click on Browse on the left-hand menu

4. In the Search all folders taskbar enter the CRN where the video currently resides and enter that number

5. You will see a list of courses that match that CRN.  Please note you may see more than one match because that CRN might match another course from a previous semester.

6. Select your course

7. All of the Panopto videos associated with that course will appear.

8. You will see them in list or thumbnail version.  You can change this by clicking on the viewing version you prefer next to the Refresh button above your video listing.

9. If you are viewing in the thumbnail version, hover over the video and you will see a white box in the corner of the video thumbnail.  

10. Click on the box to select it

11. When you make a selection you will see three buttons appear in your tool menu bar: Delete, Move, and Share

12. To move your video to another CRN select Move

13. A window within the application will open for you to direct where to move the video

14. In the search field type in the CRN for the course you want to move your video the video to and the select the course

15. Click the green Move button to move the video to that course

16. When you see Done next to the X you may close the window

17. Your video will now be in your Panopto content area in your new course and you can add it to any content area within your course

The UCM Panopto server is integrated with Blackboard, however, it is still a third-party application for Blackboard.  This means that for every course provisioned with the Panopto a separate Panopto folder is created on the Panopto server.  As a UCM user, you also have a separate Panopto folder and this is called My Folder.  Therefore, you will have access to your My Folder that is tied to your UCM network ID and one for each of your courses that is based on your course CRN number(s).  

My Folder - only the user has access to videos in their My Folder.  In order to share videos in My Folder you will need to create a new folder within your My Folder and change the share settings for that folder.  For detailed instruction to perform this task visit https://support.panopto.com/s/article/Use-My-Folder 

Course Folder - By default, the videos that you create that are tied to a specific course inherit the same permissions for that course.  Therefore, unless you modify the share settings for your course folder or specific course video only those enrolled in the course will have access to your videos created within your course folder.

The Zoom to Panopto integration will only work if you are using a UCM Enterprise license.  To learn more about that see the information in on the Zoom training page.  Once you are using a UCM Zoom account, you will want to complete the following steps:

Login to your Zoom account

Record a Zoom meeting to the Zoom Cloud

After you have completed your Zoom recording your video will automatically upload to your Panopto library.  You will get an email notification after your video has processed on the Panopto server

Your Zoom recording will be located under your MyFolder in the subfolder Meeting Recordings

This folder is automatically set to be available to users within your organization.  

If you use Panopto to create course content you are strongly encouraged to enable closed captions for your videos.   Closed captioning is found to be valuable for most learners not just those learners with hearing disabilities.  Panopto provides advanced closed-captioning capabilities for all videos created using Panopto software or uploaded to the Panopto server.   Follow the steps below to enable closed captioning for your video.  An illustrated version of these directions can be found at Enable Closed Captioning in Panopto - Guide

1. Access videos you’ve already created or uploaded to Panopto.  From your course shell click on the Panopto Video tab located in the Course Menu. A list of your videos will appear in the next window.  Access videos you’ve already created or uploaded to Panopto.  From your course shell click on the Panopto Video tab located in the Course Menu. 2. You’ll be able to tell if your video or audio file has closed captioning enabled by looking for the closed captioning icon (㏄) under the title of your video or audio file.  You’ll notice here that one does (Audio Lecture for Chapter 2) and one does not (Enabling Captions in Panopto).  

3. Hover your mouse over the title of the video and you will see these editing features.  Click on Edit to modify your file. 

4. This window will open.  Select Captions from the menu on the left-hand side of the display.  

5. To select the auto-captions that Panopto generates click on the arrow next to Import captions.  You will see two options: Import automatic captions, and Upload or request captions.  At this point, it is recommended that you select Import automatic captions.  This will create auto-generated captions for your video. 

6. While Panopto does a good job at auto-generating captions you will still want to read through the transcript to see where editing needs to occur.  To modify any text that needs to be corrected, click on the three dots next to the timecode for each segment.  An edit window will open for you to make corrections.  Click Save in that window when you are finished. 

7. Once you have corrected your captions you should click apply on the upper right side of your screen.  

8. You will be asked to verify your corrections.  Click OK. 

The video will likely start playing.  You can go back to your Blackboard tab and refresh to see that your captions have been added.

By default, students have access to your Panopto Video tab from your course menu.  However, it is advised that you hide that from students and embed your Panopto video in the appropriate content folder in your course.  View the Embed Panopto Videos in a Content Area video to learn how to embed your videos into a specific content area inside your course.

It's easy to add a quiz to your Panopto video.  Visit Adding a Quiz to Your Video for a video tutorial and detailed instructions.

After you have created your quiz using your Panopto editing function,  you can then share the video in your Blackboard content area and connect the quiz to your Grade Center by following the steps provided. If you do not want to connect the quiz to the grade center, you can choose to embed a Panopto video as normal.  This will allow learners to see the quiz questions, but will not link to the grade center.

Create the Panopto Quiz Link

• Login to Blackboard and go to the content area of your course where you want the video to reside.

• Choose Build Content button from the content creation menu and select the Panopto Quiz tool.

• The Create Panopto Quiz window will open. Provide a name and a description for the link that your learners will use to access the video.

• Choose the grading settings for the quiz video.

• Choose Yes to Enable Evaluation for this quiz and automatically create a Grade Center column.  This allows you to then indicate the points possible, grade visibility to students, and the due date for the quiz. Note: Panopto will automatically calculate what each quiz question during the video is worth by dividing the Points Possible by the number of questions.  You cannot weigh the quiz questions within a Panopto video.

• Under Options, set your viewing permissions and click submit.

Complete the Quiz Video Selection

• At this point, your Panopto video is not connected to your link.  To connect your video, click on the newly created link to open the selection menu. Do not use the dropdown arrow.

• A new page will open which lists all available videos from your course Panopto Content area. Use the radio button to select the video from the list available. Choose the video and click the selection button next to the video.  

• Next, select the Insert button from the bottom right corner of the page.

Your video Panopto video quiz is not embedded in your content area.  Note: You will not see the video frame, you will only see the video link.  You may click on the link to verify that the video is connected.  

You can check the Grade Center to ensure the column has been added correctly.
