STATEMENT ON ANY FUTURE REFEREEING ACTIVITIES
I have decided not to continue refereeing for any of the commercial for-profit outlets (owned by Elsevier, Routledge, Sage, Springer, Wiley) with only three exceptions described below. These commercial presses take huge profits out of essentially free labour of academics mostly employed by the public sector, in what is an unjustified effective subsidy of private corporate interests by the taxpayer. Some of them go on to use their privileged positions to flood the sphere of ideas, often with suboptimal "products" (in my field I have particularly in mind the journal Synthese, where I have refrained from publishing for over a decade now). Refereeing work for such commercial for-profit outlets ought to be paid, and responsible academics in tenured positions ought not support them until their exploitative practices change.
I make exception for the two Springer journals where I have historically served (continuously for two decades now) as a member of the editorial board, namely: The European Journal for Philosophy of Science (EJPS) and The Journal for General Philosophy of Science (JGPS). I also make exception for Studies in History and Philosophy of Science (SHPS), a journal that continues to be critical for the fortunes of the sort of integrated history and philosophy of science that I practice. I obviously will continue to work with journals edited by academic presses, including Philosophy of Science, The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Journal of Philosophy, Mind, Philosophical Quarterly, The British Journal for the History of Science, Critical Inquiry, Isis, etc.
