Writing Mini lessons

Common Definition: The teacher models a brief and explicit lesson focused on a writing skill or strategy to help students understand the characteristics of good writing (modeled writing) and write in a variety of genres with purpose and voice.

Benefits: Allows students to refine their writing skills. Students are engaged with explicit instruction that is focused on an intentional skill or strategy to support writing. Students participate in guided practice and are provided with exemplary models.

When: A writing mini lesson is a part of the writing block and should be introduced prior to students applying a writing skill.

Assessment: Teachers should confer with students about their writing, take anecdotal notes, ask questions about their writing, and provide descriptive feedback on targeted areas of strength and growth to support students' writing development
