Independent Writing
Common Definition: Engages students daily in a structured routine that provides a sustained period of time for students to write. Students become excellent writers by applying principles related to conventions, craft, and the process of writing.
Benefits: Independent writing supports the development of skills and provides an opportunity for students to apply what they learned from the mini lesson.
When: Independent writing is an integral component of the writers block and occurs daily.
Assessment: Independent writing is an opportunity for students to develop and hone their writing skills. The teacher should use informal observations, anecdotal notes, writing samples, and published writing.
