Common Definition: Small group instructional context in which the teacher supports each writer's development of writing. Allows for differentiated learning in order to address the common needs of students in small groups.
Benefits: Students are able to receive explicit and personalized instructional support from the teacher to improve his or her writing development.
When: Guided writing/practice is an integral component of balanced literacy and occurs daily during the literacy block. The minimum recommended time to is between ten and fifteen minutes.
