Hi, I'm Lara Verret! Welcome to my Digital Archive for Humanities Core 2022-2023. So happy to have you here! I am a first year drama major at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, and I live in Orange County. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my friends, making and listening to music, and cooking.
I've created this site in order to document my learnings and thoughts as we work through different pieces this year. I'll be analyzing all kinds of literature, film, artwork, etc. More specifically, I'll be examining the topic of worldbuilding--how various works build worlds, how the world we live in affects these works, how worldbuilding takes place in our world, and how we can participate in worldbuilding! In order to organize my archive, I've divided the work from this year into three quarters below. Go ahead and take a look!
The definition of worldbuilding can get complicated and expansive. Merriam Webster will say that it is "the art of creating a new fictional world." But, worldbuilding as we will be discussing branches into reality while this definition isolates it to fiction. A quick google search might tell you that "Worldbuilding is the process of constructing a world, originally an imaginary one, sometimes associated with a fictional universe." Google stole this from John Hamilton's book, You Write It: Science Fiction (2009). This definition brings us a little bit closer, but I would still say worldbuilding often deals with reflecting on the world at hand and taking steps to shape it. So, the definition I have provided is the most simplified version of worldbuilding as I have personally come to understand it. For the purposes of my archive, this is the definition I'll be using and expanding on.
Movies and other digital medias all create worlds of their own through storytelling!
Believe it or not, your mind is an expansive space for worldbuilding! Any world you can imagine or inhabit in your headspace can be built!
Literature is a powerful form of storytelling that can create full vivid worlds that come to life in your imagination!
