TB Testing Requirement

Dear Incoming MAT Candidates,

As part of your UCI School of Education admissions requirements and in preparation for your student placements, you will be required to submit a negative TB test or chest x-ray. In addition, UC mandates that all incoming students complete an online TB Risk Screening questionnaire and obtain four (4) required immunizations or demonstrate compliance. Compliance with the SOE TB requirement and the UC mandated requirements are monitored by and facilitated through the UCI Student Health Center (SHC). The TB test, for purposes of SOE requirements and required for fieldwork placement during the program, is valid for 3 years and must remain current throughout the program. We will accept valid test results dated from January 1^st, 2021. Instructions on how to upload documents and how to comply with the UC requirements are available on SHC’s website at:

https://shc.uci.edu/new-student-information/immunization-requirements. Students will receive separate “secure messages” from SHC with reminders regarding these requirements.

For those of you in the process of receiving the COVID-19 vaccination, the following is important information to note about timing related to TB testing:

COVID Testing and TB Testing: The CDC guideline is to perform TB testing prior to COVID vaccination. If COVID vaccine has been administered, TB testing is to be deferred for 4 weeks after the series has been completed. For the most up to date information about COVID-19 vaccinations and testing, please bookmark UCIForward. It is likely that COVID-19 and flu vaccinations will be mandated by the University for all incoming and continuing student (formal decision is pending including deadline dates). Certain medical and personal/religious exemptions will likely be allowed. Details to follow.

Students will need to submit verification of a valid TB test by confirmation from a doctor’s office or confirmation from a lab or clinic. If you do not have a valid TB test on file (dated from January 1^st or after), we would recommend you completing this requirement as well as obtaining immunizations through one of these options:

• UCI Student Health Center: The MAT TB Testing and Immunization Clinic has been rescheduled to Friday, June 25^th, 2021 from 8:30am-3pm.

  • You should be receiving a message with directions on how to schedule an appointment with our Student Health Center. If the Clinic date does not work for you, MAT students will have an opportunity to schedule appointments starting June 14.

• • For students with UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP)- The cost of testing and immunizations are 100% covered by UC SHIP. A referral is required by SHC if you receive TB testing and/or immunizations at any outside clinic or provider’s office. A referral is not required if you obtain these services at an in-network retail pharmacy. Note that CVS Minute Clinic is a clinic, a separate billing entity from their pharmacy and, therefore, a referral is required. Contact SHC’s Insurance Services department at shc-insurance@uci.edu or 949-824-2388 to obtain a referral.

  • For students without UCI Student Health Insurance-You may participate in the MAT TB Testing and Immunizations Clinic. However, your fees will be transferred to your campus billing account. You may seek reimbursement from your own plan unless it is an HMO-type plan (UCI Student Health Insurance Clinic pricing is here).

• Contact your primary care physician’s office for testing and immunizations. Reminder – SHC is the PCP for all students enrolled in UC SHIP. A referral is required if a student wishes to obtain TB testing and/or immunizations from any other primary care provider.

Your access to the UCI Student Health Center portal should be activated sometime during this week so that you can enter information and upload your documents. The initial deadline to submit TB Testing documentation is July 6th, 2021. There is a Final Deadline of July 23rd, 2021 for all of your immunization requirements. Please check the Student Health Patient Portalregularly to check your access status and for secure messages sent by SHC regarding these requirements.
