Project-based learning is Acacia's (she prefers to be called by her first name) passion, pride, joy, and expertise. One of your first assignments in ED 302 (taught by Acacia) is to collaborate with a partner outside of your content area to create a PBL unit and Google presentation on any topic of your choosing. For those who wish to get an early start on the reading, you may purchase the book on Amazon. The main chapters covered in class are chapters 1, 2, 3, and some of 5. There is a lot to process, but Acacia will heavily scaffold and provide examples, such as the one below (Zac Efron). Topics that candidates have chosen to study in the past include: Disney, Global Warming, Soccer, Boba Tea, Kanye West, Snacks, Books (i.e., To Kill a Mockingbird), Cosmetics, Netflix shows, SCOTUS, Batman, and the list goes on forever! You will have fun as you engage in critical thought, collaboration, and creative thinking. Enjoy! :)
Dr. Bettina Love is a brilliant ed reform leader who has a talent for brining into crystal clear focus how real change can happen. She is an award-winning author and Professor at the University of Georgia. Click here to access the video. In this video clip, Dr. Love explains what is meant by the term "co-conspirator". The video is about six minutes in length. Please watch this video before we meet for orientation on Friday, June 18, 2021. We will explore the question, "What does it mean to take a risk in education and why does it matter?"
Dr. Roberto G. Gonzales is Professor of Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is also the Director of the Immigration Initiative at Harvard. His research examines the effects of legal contexts on the coming-of-age experiences of vulnerable and hard-to-reach immigrant youth populations. To deepen understanding about the lived experiences of undocumented students, UCI's MAT candidates read Lives in Limbo at the start of the program. Please watch this video before we meet for orientation on Friday, June 18, 2021.
In the spring of 2020, our partners schools in Orange County closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Overnight, our student teachers, mentor teachers and UCI instructors made the change to distance learning. Some student teachers felt short-changed because they did not have a chance to complete their student teaching experience in person. Over time, they have gained extremely valuable skills while teaching online. We have learned that distance learning is not the most ideal situation, and issues of equity have emerged. Many schools have families with little or no access to technology or wifi to participate in distance learning. We are proud of the efforts that our student teachers and UCI MAT team members have made to reduce some of the inequities with technology and distance learning.
At UCI, your first Summer Session 1 will be online. We plan to hold Summer Session 2 in person, but in reality, nothing is certain during these challenging times. We remain committed to following the policies set by the California governor, the California Teaching Commission (CTC), and UC leadership. The 2021-2022 academic school year is expected to be in-person - please plan accordingly.
During Summer Session 1, your courses will follow the schedule that is sent to you by the end of April. Our instructors will provide a combination of synchronous and asynchronous experiences. Please be prepared for quite a bit of time in front of your digital device. Part of the reason for trying to stick with synchronous instruction is to attempt to build community and collaboration - a key part of our MAT program. The other side to distance learning requires self-regulation, organization, and creative thinking.
If you have any questions or concerns about distance learning, that is completely understandable. It is best to be transparent with you before you commit your time and money. If you would like to discuss a possible deferral to the 2021-2022 school year, please send me an email and we can discuss your options.
