The UCI Multiple Subject MAT Program takes 14 months to complete. The program starts with our Orientation on June 18th , then Summer Session One begins on Monday, June 21st.
Courses: Over the 14 months you will take 24 courses and earn 90 quarter units. The courses in each quarter are designed to build off previous quarters and are strategically scheduled to match your fieldwork and student teaching experiences. The courses fit to match our 5 MAT Core Commitments.
Placement 1: This placement starts on the first day of school (usually in mid-late August) and ends in December when your school starts their fall winter break. This placement starts out with 2 full days a week of fieldwork observation and participation. This placement ends with 3 weeks of full-time student teaching. Your fall quarter courses will start two weeks early in September so that you have enough time in December for Student Teaching. You will be working on your edTPA Literacy Task during this placement. You will be encouraged to take the RICA exam at the end of December.
Fieldwork: During your 2 full days of fieldwork, you are observing and assisting your mentor teacher. You are also asking for opportunities to practice trying instructional routines and procedures.
Student Teaching: This placement ends with full-time student teaching in December. During December, you will not have any UCI classes. Instead, you go to your school placement. During student teaching you will collaborate with your mentor teacher to plan lessons and teach small groups, whole class lesson and support individual students.
Placement 2: This placement starts in January and ends in June. You are a student teacher during this placement so the expectation is that you are gradually assuming greater responsibility for planning and instruction.
Winter Quarter: During winter quarter, you are at your school site Monday-Thursday. You will have classes at UCI all day on Fridays (9:00 am - 4:00 pm) and 2-3 evenings a week from 4:30-7:20 pm. You are also working on your edTPA math task during this quarter.
Spring Quarter: During spring quarter you are at your school site Monday-Friday. You will have classes at UCI 3 nights a week from 4:30-7:20 pm. During spring quarter, you are expected to take over responsibility for planning and instruction for a minimum of 4 full weeks. You are also working on your action research for ED 246, 247 and 248.
