Title: Ritual Bell (Chunyu)

Date: Approx. 400-300 BCE, Warring States period (475-221 BCE) 

Medium: Bronze

Description: 

This Ritual Bell, which features a Tiger figure at the top, originates from the Warring States period (474-221 BCE). The bell is made of bronze and has some wear on it as it is very old yet remains in pristine condition. This beautiful bell embodies the cultural significance and cultivated craftsmanship of ancient China. 

The ritual bell has a very important significance which relates to the kingship in ancient China. During this period, rulers often used ceremonial objects, like this bell, to assert authority and status. The tiger motif can symbolize strength and strong leadership qualities which further shows the connection between these animals in art pieces and the authority of the ruling dynasty. 

The bell plays/played a crucial role in religious and ceremonial practice. The sounds that this bell would make were believed to ward off evil spirits, ensure good beginnings of important events, and serve as a blessing. 

This artifact also provides a look into the political aspects of ancient China during this period. As the rival states fought for dominance, rituals and symbols of kingship, especially the tiger motif, became important aspects of showing authority and helping maintain social order. 

This piece's association with the Warring States period offers viewers a look into an important era in Chinese history. This piece is preserved with amazing care and truly represents the rituals and beliefs of ancient rulers and their citizens.
