Mentor Teacher Professional Development
*CTC Requirement*
New Mentor Teachers to UCI are required to complete 10 hours of professional development through our online Training Modules.
If teachers have been a mentor to student teachers within the past 5 years, they do not need to complete the training. Also, if mentors have been a support provider for induction within the past 5 years, they do not need to complete this training.
Visit the "Training Modules" page on this website (upper right corner).
Q: How can I complete the 10 hours of mentor training required by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing?
A: We have created some online Training Modules for mentors that will help support student teachers throughout the year. These modules include information, resources, and activities that mentors and student teachers can explore together. The modules are intended to be incorporated into daily routines, rather than as additional tasks unrelated to classroom goals. For all new UCI mentors, four of the required hours will be completed by attending a fall orientation and collaborating with UCI supervisors during fall and winter observation visits. The remaining six hours can be completed through the modules on this website. The amount of time required to complete each module will depend on the way mentors and student teachers engage with the suggested activities and resources.
Q: How will these professional development hours be documented and collected by UCI?
A: Towards the end of January, a survey link will be sent to ALL mentor teachers. One of the questions on the survey will ask if mentors have completed their 10 hours. Mentors will indicate "yes" or "no". No other paperwork or documents are collected pertaining to a mentor's professional development. We trust that mentors will complete the hours by the end of January.
