Reflecting back on the past 9 weeks, I realized that practicing mindfulness can have a profound impact on various aspects of my life, including increasing gratitude, promoting calmness, enhancing self-care, achieving a peaceful state of mind, and helping me stay grounded during stressful periods like midterm weeks.
Mindfulness allows me to focus on the present moment and cultivate a sense of appreciation for what is happening around me. The walks in Aldrich Park without students walking around and occupying the park made me realize how beautiful our campus truly is. By practicing gratitude in my daily life, I become more aware of the positive aspects and experiences, fostering a deeper sense of gratitude for even the small things like the pink blossoms or crunchy leaves on the concrete.
These mindfulness practices helped me detach from overwhelming thoughts and external pressures by redirecting my attention to what I was writing in my journal. By practicing techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or body scans, I find moments of calmness and regain focus even in the midst of school-related stress or a busy study schedule. I feel this when I complete the activity late at night especially after a long day.
Self-awareness and self-compassion are essential components of self-care. By being present with myself, I take the time to identify my needs, set boundaries, and prioritize activities that promote my well-being. One of my goals this quarter was to create a regular self-care routine and I'm glad that I was able to take nature walks and engage in relaxation exercises.
Mindfulness and the state of meditation was not as easy to achieve as I thought in the very beginning. It's easy to get distracted from what I was supposed to be doing and let my mind drift. Regular practice over the course of the quarter made meditation and reflection much easier and I was able to increase the duration and frquency of these practices over time. Originally I was hesitant of spending over 30 minutes for an activity because I thought doing homework or studying would be a more useful use of time but I was definitely proven wrong. Taking breaks while writing the research paper and incorporating mindfulness practices throughout the day has helped me embrace gratitude, calmness, self-care, and my well-being.
Week 1-4 pages of my journal where I logged the practices I completed.
Lastly, I'm including a Spotify playlist that I created for my walks in the park. For most of the walk, I would take my earbuds off and simply listen to the sounds of nature. The birds chirping, the leaves crunchy under my feet, the gush of wind that blows my hair away, and the occasional early birds and dog walkers I bump into on Inner Ring Road. However, I love music and it felt lonely to walk in silence so I would eventually put my earbuds in and listen to music as I walk back to my dorm. I included Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and thuy on the playlist for an R&B and pop mix. Rather than calm acoustic songs in the morning, I preferred upbeat melodies after a calm walk in order to energize me for the rest of the day.
