Process for New and Returning 4-H Adult Volunteers
New Adult Volunteers
Returning Adult Volunteers
You are a new volunteer if this is your first time applying to be one or if you did not have an approved enrollment in the previous year. An approved enrollment will have an "active" status in the system. You may not engage in 4-H activities until you are approved.
Step 1: Explore the list of available clubs. Speak with the club leader to learn more about the volunteer opportunities available within the club.
Step 2: Complete the 4-H Volunteer Interest Survey. This is part of a screening process to help ensure a safe environment for youth.
Step 3: Create a family account in ZSuite and register as an adult volunteer. Make sure the family email is valid and one you check regularly. Links to helpful enrollment guides are located on the Resources page. We recommend reviewing the ZSuite resources before entering ZSuite for the first time.
Step 4: Complete a California Department of Justice Live Scan background check. This is also part of the screening process to help keep a safe environment for youth. The Live Scan form will be emailed to you after the interest survey has been completed.
Step 5: New Volunteer Training.
a. All new 4-H volunteers are required to take the New Volunteer Training online courses in the eXtension system before they can be approved as volunteers. You can access the course by clicking 2025-2026 New Volunteer Course or through the 4-H Learning Center. Make sure you select the CA New Volunteer training for the current program year.
b. New volunteers must also attend an orientation meeting at the County 4-H Office. This step can be completed any time during the current program year.
Step 6: Pay the enrollment fee. There are 2 ways to pay the $30.00 adult enrollment fee.
Pay by card on our online payment survey. If you have an ad/spam blocker, you may need to disable it. Keep your receipt in case we need to verify that the payment cleared.
or
Submit a check or money order (made out to UC Regents) to the 4-H Office. Include the names of the individuals you are paying for.
Once all the steps are complete, your name will be submitted to the Regional 4-H Supervisor for approval. When the enrollment is approved, the status in ZSuite will change to "active."
You are a returning volunteer if you had an approved enrollment in the previous year. An approved enrollment will have an "active" status in the system. If you did not have an active status in the previous year, you must complete the process for a new volunteer.
Step 1: Log in to ZSuite with the same email and password you used the previous year. Do NOT create a new account. Contact the county office if you need assistance. Select your name from the list in the household profile and re-enroll for the current year. All volunteers must be approved annually. Update any information that has changed. Links to helpful enrollment guides are located on the Resources page.
Step 2: Complete the Returning Volunteer Training in the eXtension system. You can access the course by clicking 2025-2026 Returning Volunteer Course or through the 4-H Learning Center. Make sure you are completing the Returning and not the New Volunteer modules. The courses are not interchangeable.
