University of Asia and the Pacific's Outreach and Extension Program
BIGGKAS+ is the university-wide extension program of the University of Asia and the Pacific. The extension program is a fundamental element of the liberal and well-rounded learning environment that UA&P provides to its students, faculty and staff in order to cultivate genuine intellectual formation. Likewise, the extension program is grounded in the University credo which states that it aspires to form “individuals who are professionally competent, creative and enterprising, zealous for the common good, and capable of making free, morally upright choices, and who can thus act as positive agents of change and service to society”.
The project name is an acronym for the seven (7) basic initiative extension clusters, namely: BASA, ISIP, GAWA, GALING, KATESISMO, ARTE, and SPORTS. It is an offshoot of the university-wide project BIGGKAS initiated by the Civics Desk of then Office of Student Affairs, and now Center for Student Affairs (CSA).
The concept was inspired by a simple, half-day outreach activity initiated back in 2005, in the form of an event designed to help children appreciate reading through story-telling sessions, art workshops, and book lending. From then, it evolved into a full-blown, extension program that aims to kindle the spirit of generosity and volunteerism among UA&P students as well as promote the values of charity, solidarity and citizenship.
BIGGKAS+ stands on the same underpinnings and basic design of the original BIGGKAS, thereby having the same acronym that corresponds to the same extension clusters. The plus (+) sign is a provision made to cater to a wider range of projects that may not be covered by the existing extension clusters. Moreover, the plus sign connotes that the program has evolved into the larger UA&P community, allowing faculty and staff to now share their time, talent, and expertise with the various extension programs or projects that adheres to sustainable, relevant and needs-based approaches.
UA&P's partnership with Brgy. Caniogan, 2016-2019
Last January 31, 2020, the University's partnership with Brgy. Caniogan has ended, capped off with an exit program organized by the BIGGKAS+ team. The University will forever be grateful for the opportunity to partner and affect real change to the community of Brgy. Caniogan.
Dr. Winston Conrad Padojinog, University President and Brgy. Caniogan's Administrator during the exit program
That same year, on February 29, 2020, BIGGKAS+ visited and conducted an ocular with the next target partner community of Brgy. Pineda, Pasig City.
During the visit to the community, BIGGKAS+ and other representatives of the University were exposed to the realities on the level of the community. The visit enabled the BIGGKAS+ Team to devise plans on how to engage with the different sectors of the community. Additionally, the BIGGKAS+ Team also conducted sessions of focus group discussions (FGD) to get a complete picture of what the stakeholders of the community needs.
To help UA&Ps units, departments, and students become more technically aware of extension and outreach planning, execution, and evaluation through the BIGGKAS+ TWG.
The BIGGKAS+ TWG will act as beacons of outreach and extension of units and departments and report directly to the BIGGKAS+ coordinators the necessary needs of their units with respect to outreach and extension for SY 2022-23.
To link UA&P to its partner community based on the agreements set in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and based on the training and needs assessment (TNA) identified with the LGU leaders of the community (improvement of the 5Ps of the partner community)
To provide UA&P with assistance in the achievement of its autonomy through the assigned area from the accreditor PACUCOA on Area VIII - Social Orientation and Community Involvement
To contribute to the strengthening of outreach and extension-related skills of the university and the targeted audience. This can also be BIGGKAS+ source for revenue.
The BIGGKAS+ Technical Working Group, 2021-2022
