Oil Sands Tailings
Research Facility

Creating tomorrow's technologies

Alberta's oil sands industry plays a key role in helping Canada's economy stay strong while providing a stable energy supply across the nation and the world. However, the environmental footprint of oil sands operations continue to be a challenge.

Enhancing oil sands tailings management is more crucial than ever.

Through our innovative partnerships and unique research facility, the Oil Sands Tailings Research Facility (OSTRF) is well poised to respond to these challenges. The OSTRF, located in Devon, Alberta, is dedicated to cross-disciplinary oil sands tailings research and development, and enables fundamental exploration of new concepts which then can be tested at the pilot scale. In addition to facilitating ground-breaking research in oil sands tailings, the OSTRF is the chief vehicle through which academia, industry and government meet to discuss tailings issues in Alberta and disseminate research to the public.

The OSTRF also hosts several conferences, short courses and events to keep the public abreast of our multidisciplinary research!

The OSTRF is a part of the University of Alberta Geotechnical Centre. You can subscribe to the Centre's YouTube Channel and follow its LinkedIn page to stay up to date with the exciting developments at our Centre!
