All UAlberta students have access to Google's educational suite, and the MD Program utilizes Cally as its official learning management platform for curriculum delivery, program administration, assessment, and evaluation.
As a UAlberta student, you have access to the educational suite of Google products, including UAlberta Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, and more. You can access all of your Google apps using your CCID.
All formal communication from the MD Program will be sent to you via your university email account.
Cally is the official learning management system for the University of Alberta medical program.
Cally is a network of the following systems.
Calendar: This platform allows you to view your class schedule in an online interface or sync it with your devices. The schedule details when and where you are expected to be each week. Generally, the schedule is posted a few weeks in advance. During pre-clerkship, the class schedule tends to be a full day on Monday, a half day on Tuesday, a full day on Wednesday, nothing on Thursday, and a wrap-up on Friday, with Saturday and Sunday as rest days. Here, you will also find posted lecture recordings.
Assess: This platform houses curricular materials, assignments, and assessments. You will use it to access the following key components of your courses: attendance tracking, groups, assessments, OSCEs, EPA/MDPAs, evaluations, and clinical encounters.
Users: This module allows you to view academics and electives, class lists, and grades, as well as submit absence requests. Remember, pre-clerkship and clerkship absence policies are different. The document below provides information regarding how to submit an absence request through Cally. Please view the policies here: Preclerkship Absence Policy; Clerkship Absence Policy.
Portfolio: Here, you can find your academic performance data.
Exam: The MD Program hosts an internal secure assessment site for our written assessments, including quizzes, midterms, and final exams. Some assessments require you to bring your own device to the session, while others are held in campus computer labs. Details on access to this system will be provided during the specific assessments.
Data: The data module provides students with the UAlberta MD curriculum map. Here, you can locate recordings of lectures from the current and previous years and search information by keyword.
This is a reminder that all curricular materials are provided for your learning and remain under university copyright policies. Learning materials such as lecture slides, handouts, videos, etc., are not to be shared on any public platform and are available for your individual study purposes only.
Cally is full of useful tools to help you search and find course and clerkship materials. It also has a chatbot that you can find on the assess.med page to help you keep track of upcoming assignments.
The Cally Chat feature can be found in the Assess section in the bottom right corner and will soon be available across other Cally sites as well!
Current functionalities include: viewing upcoming assignments and activities, checking events in the calendar, viewing absence or elective requests, and accessing live chat support!
Below are two guides for using the Calendar and Absences features on Cally:
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging tool for learning and research. It is important to note that use of AI for formal assessments remains prohibited unless specifically stated in assignment instructions. However, we recognize students will be exploring different AI tools to aid in their learning and that AI will be an important tool for medicine in the future. Some useful resources to guide your considerations for AI tools are suggested here:
