Email your school contact (name + email is on your volunteer information sheet) & include the following:
Introduction of yourself as a HCMP piano / guitar volunteer
Confirm the lesson time you're assigned to
Set up a date for which you would like to start lessons
Any questions you have that will prepare you for your first lesson, such as:
How many students you'll be teaching & their approximate skill levels
Where to check-in when you arrive at the school (i.e. office desk)
Where parking is, if available
Etc.
Getting there:
Try to arrive at least ~5 minutes before your allotted lesson time ; you want to be there before your students arrive (if they don't see you there, they might not wait for you and leave the lesson instead)
Have a solid route planned
Bring with you:
Student registration form + informed consent form
Any lesson materials i.e. sheet music, books
Guitar teachers: double check with us to see if your school has available guitars for the students - if they don't you'll have to grab a guitar from our office and bring it to the school at your first lesson
Introduce yourself to:
School contact / secretary if they're present. You may be required to check-in each lesson.
Your students & get to know them
Here is a fun worksheet for that you and your student can complete together to break the ice!
Your students' parents if they're present
Parents usually arrive at the end of the lesson to pick their kids up - make the effort to meet them ; it'd also be a good idea to get their contact information so that you can communicate with them in the future for anything i.e. absences, HCMP events, reminders to fill the student registration form, etc.
Assess your student's level:
Have they taken music lessons before?
If so, which instruments? For how long? Level?
Why do they want to learn to play piano / guitar?
After a few classes, once you have completed a piece, or song with your student, assess whether they would like to perform this piece virtually for their peers to see! If so, introduce the student to the "HCMP's Student Spotlight Program,". This can be a great opportunity to introduce the student to the performance aspect of playing, as well as give them the confidence to play at the year-end recital!
HCMP's 2021-2022 Student Spotlight Information Sheet (for online/in-person): This document contains information on the HCMP's Student Spotlight Program. Please ensure you read this document by yourself, and with your student before participating. The first page of the document can be shared with students and parents if you wish.
Here is a step-by-step guide that you can use to help you navigate uploading/recording your student's chosen piece during class!
