Matthias Götte obtained his PhD degree in 1997 at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany. In 2000, following his postdoctoral training at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research in Montreal, he joined the faculty at McGill University in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. In 2014, he accepted the position as Chair of the Medical Microbiology & Immunology Department at the University of Alberta (U of A) in Edmonton, Alberta. In 2023, he completed a second term as Chair and is now the Director of U of A’s research & training program in pandemic preparedness; Striving for Pandemic Preparedness - The Alberta Research Consortium (SPP-ARC).
Research in the Götte lab is focused on biochemical studies of viral polymerases. These enzymes can be viewed as “engines” of virus genome replication. Antiviral drugs that target virus-specific polymerases are approved for treatment of infection with HIV, HCV, HBV, herpesviruses and coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19. The Götte lab has made significant contributions to the discovery and development of viral polymerase inhibitors. These activities include the identification of selective and broad-spectrum antivirals and studies on the mechanisms of action and drug resistance.
