Advanced Hepatology Fellowship
Advanced Hepatology Fellowship
The Liver Unit, Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, invites applications from individuals interested in pursuing training in both general hepatology and transplant hepatology.
The proposed training spans one to two years, starting each October. Applicants with two years of gastroenterology subspecialty training are preferred for this fellowship. Training will be conducted at the University of Alberta Hospital, a major tertiary care facility with a well-established Liver Transplant Program since 1989. We perform approximately 90 liver transplants annually, including live donor transplants.
The fellowship provides inpatient and outpatient exposure to complications of cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, hepatobiliary oncology, autoimmune and metabolic liver diseases, and critical care in liver patients. Trainees are also expected to develop a research project during the fellowship.
Elective rotations will be tailored to each candidate's interests. While there are no on-call requirements, fellows will join the hepatology staff during weekends when assigned to inpatient hepatology rotations. The trainee will participate in the academic activities of the Liver Unit.
The core faculty members consist of 11 hepatologists with different areas of expertise. The Liver Program is supported by a variety of specialists dedicated to hepatology, hepatobiliary oncology, and liver transplantation in the fields of therapeutic endoscopy, hepatobiliary transplant surgery, pathology, radiology, interventional radiology, medical oncology, and infectious diseases.
The Liver Unit is recognized internationally for viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, liver transplant, and cirrhosis complications related research; the trainee is expected to take primary responsibility of at least one research project during their training.
Each year we accept a maximum of two successful candidates into this advanced fellowship program; spots are competitive and we recommend applying early in the application cycle.
