ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Liver Unit, Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, invites applications from individuals interested in pursuing training in viral hepatitis and general hepatology, including liver transplantation.

The Faculty consists of nine full-time hepatologists, three hepatobiliary/transplant surgeons, and three pediatric gastroenterologists/hepatologists. The Liver Program is supported by a variety of specialists dedicated to hepatology and liver transplantation in the fields of pathology, radiology, and infectious diseases.

Fellowship training will be provided at the University of Alberta Hospital, which is a major tertiary care facility with a well-established Liver Transplant Program since 1989. We perform approximately 90 transplants per year, including live donor liver transplants. Over 1200 liver transplants have been performed at our center.

The proposed training is for a period of one to two years, commencing each July. Applicants with two years of gastroenterology subspecialty training are preferred for this Fellowship. Training will include inpatient and outpatient exposure to cirrhosis complications, viral hepatitis, hepatobiliary oncology, autoimmune and metabolic liver diseases, and critical care in liver patients.

The trainee will participate in the academic activities of the Liver Unit. The Liver Unit is recognized internationally for viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, liver transplantation and cirrhosis complications-related research and the trainee is expected to take primary responsibility of at least one research project during their training.

The overall goal of the Hepatology fellowship program is to train highly qualified physicians in Hepatology, in order to give them the tools to become clinical and research leaders with nationally and internationally recognition.
