Advanced gastroenterology fellowships are designed for trainees that have completed internal medicine and gastroenterology training, but are looking for additional training and expertise in a specific area of gastroenterology. Fellows are fully integrated into the Division of Gastroenterology and are expected to be an active member in the GI Division.
Fellowships are typically one year and most often commence on October 1st. In certain circumstances, they may be renewed for a 2nd year. Fellowships extending longer than 12 months must have a significant research component.
The Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Alberta offers advanced Gastroenterology clinical training in the following areas:
PRIMARY BILIARY CHOLANGITIS (PBC)
AUTOIMMUNE HEPATOLOGY DISEASES (AIH)

Proof of English Language Proficiency (ELP) to satisfy the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta through an approved exam
Note: Please review the language requirements. Click here for the CPSA English Language Requirements. Pay particular attention to the exemptions as most international applicants are not exempt from writing an ELP exam.
Applicants must indicate their funding status on the online application form.
Opportunities for funding may take many forms; being funded by the university of Alberta GI division is limited and a competitive process. In some cases, a fellow may be sponsored by their home government or hospital, or through scholarship/industry funds. All sponsored funding requires a confirmation letter from the sponsor.
The Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver (CASL) is a competitive funding source that may be applied to for hepatology fellows. Arrange with the Hepatology Program Director if interested as they submit the application.
International trainees must have a secured form of institutional or government funding.
