Graduate Student Positions

Four Ph.D. student positions are available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta, in Prof. Mohamed Gamal El-Din’s research group. The positions are highly focused on environmental engineering and research related to the remediation of municipal and industrial wastewater. The recruited Ph.D. students will work on projects that concentrate on the application of solar-driven photocatalysis, electro-oxidation, passive treatment approaches, and resource recovery technologies. The students will work in a supportive research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and will be engaged in multidisciplinary collaboration.

The candidates must have a MS degree in Environmental Engineering, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. The successful applicant is expected to have experience in fundamental and applied research related to physical, chemical, and biological processes.

The graduate students will work in a supportive research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and will be engaged in multidisciplinary collaboration. Interested candidates should send the application to mgamalel-din@ualberta.ca or chelmeayala@ualberta.ca.

The review process will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled; only shortlisted candidates will be notified. We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those individuals selected will be contacted.

Dr. Gamal El-Din hires on the basis of merit. We are committed to the principle of equity in employment. We welcome diversity and encourage applications from all qualified women and men, including persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and Aboriginal persons.

Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Material Development

One postdoctoral fellow position with a strong focus on material sciences is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. The candidate will work with Prof. Mohamed Gamal El-Din on multidisciplinary research projects on the fundamental understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes.

The ideal candidate should have experience in developing advanced materials such as biomaterials, green materials, nano and composite materials, porous materials, and colloids. The candidate should also possess experience in applying these materials to biological, physical, and chemical wastewater treatment. The postdoctoral fellow will work in collaboration with researchers working in the areas of water/wastewater treatment and reclamation approaches, emphasizing adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation.

The candidate should also have experience in surface and colloids science and be well-versed in various techniques for interface analysis such as size exclusion chromatography (SEC), Soxhlet extraction, thermogravimetric, dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (AFM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), and porosimetry analyzer. The prospective applicant should have previous experience and a strong background in separation processes, material synthesis, and characterization. The applicant should also have a basic understanding of analytical chemistry and organic synthesis procedures.

The candidate will be expected to publish research results in journals and present them at conferences. The candidate will also be required to train and mentor graduate students, assist in writing research proposals, and help in the preparation of research papers. If desired, the candidate can also obtain teaching experience.

The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, or a related field; have completed their Ph.D. within the past five years (i.e., 2019 or later) with a minimum of three first-author papers, in which at least one paper published in a top journal; have a strong track record of refereed journal publications related to separation processes, material synthesis and characterization, or materials applied for environmental remediation; be able to work independently; possess strong written and oral communication skills; and have a solid knowledge of advanced statistical approaches for analyzing complex datasets.

To apply, interested candidates should send in their applications to nterested candidates should send the application to mgamalel-din@ualberta.ca or chelmeayala@ualberta.ca consisting of a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, 1-2 reprints of their most significant contributions to research (max 15 pages), and the contact information of three references. Applications will be accepted and considered immediately. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

The review process will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The University of Alberta is committed to creating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce and welcomes applications from all qualified persons. They encourage individuals who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the University to apply, including women, First Nations, Métis and Inuit, members of visible minority groups, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. Thank you to all applicants for their interest, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Environmental Biotechnology/Microbiology

An exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral fellow with a strong expertise in environmental biotechnology is now available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. The successful candidate will be working alongside Prof. Mohamed Gamal El-Din on multidisciplinary research projects that aim to gain a fundamental understanding of biological water treatment processes.

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct research in the area of natural and engineered biological processes for municipal and industrial wastewater (such as oil sands process water) in conjunction with other treatment processes, such as advanced oxidation and/or adsorption. The candidate is expected to address fundamental questions related to microbial physiology, biogeochemistry, bioinformatics, and environmental microbiology by conducting research using advanced microbiology and molecular biology tools, including (meta)genomics sequencing (e.g. amplicon, transcriptome), microscopy (e.g. FISH), and other fingerprinting approaches (e.g. qPCR). The postdoctoral fellow will also use toxicological and biotechnological tools to study the effectiveness of biological treatments. It is expected that the candidate will be able to disseminate the research results through journal publications and conference presentations. The candidate will also be expected to assist in training and mentoring graduate students, writing research proposals and assisting in writing research papers. Teaching experience can be arranged if desired.

The ideal candidate should meet the following qualifications: (i) a Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering, environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, or related areas with a solid background in wastewater treatment, biological treatment and molecular biological techniques; (ii) have completed the Ph.D. within the past five years (i.e., 2018 or later) with a minimum of three first-author papers, in which at least one paper published in a top journal; (iii) a strong track record of refereed journal publications; (iv) ability to work independently; (v) strong written and oral communication skills; and (vi) solid knowledge of advanced statistical approaches for analyzing complex molecular datasets is highly desirable.

The application should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, 1-2 reprints (s) of your most significant research contributions (max 15 pages), and the contact information of three references. Applications will be accepted and considered immediately. Interested candidates should send their applications to mgamalel-din@ualberta.ca or chelmeayala@ualberta.ca.
